7/13/26 - Newsletters Week, Part One

Good afternoon!

The About page of Disability Thinking Weekday starts with this explanation of why I am doing this newsletter in this particular way:

"30 years ago, it felt like an event when we came across any media on disability issues. Now it’s a challenge to narrow the daily flood of disability content down to an amount manageable enough to digest and share with others. Whatever else happens with internet culture and social media — the good and the bad — I will always be grateful for what they have done to enrich disability culture, journalism, and activism."

I am still surprised and moved by the sheer amount and diversity of authentic disability content "out there" – both personal and journalistic. My ongoing wonder at it all probably has something to do with my age. But I still think it's a valid stance to be a bit amazed and excited by disability culture on the internet. It's the main reason I'm still doing this.

This week, instead of the usual article links, I will be sharing links to other disability-related newsletters and publications. Some are new to me. Others I have shared posts from before, but not so often that regular readers would be familiar with them. If you like any of them, I hope you will subscribe and help support them.

Speaking of support, through the end of July, annual paid memberships are still discounted at $40. Just click the "Subscribe or Upgrade" button below to get started. Or, you can always make a one-time donation using the second button below.

Steve Way's Substack

Steve Way

"I’m a disabled actor, writer, and comedian who happens to know more about the American healthcare system than I ever wanted to. My wheelchair and ventilator run on Medicaid, which means I’ve spent my whole life on the receiving end of the policies most people only read about. This newsletter is where I write it all down."

I've posted two or three of Steve's posts recently, and I look forward to reading more. So far, I like his blend of personal and political – disability policy talk that feels more grounded, emotionally resonant, and less ideological than this kind of thing can often be.

The D*List

Various contributors

"Welcome to The D*List - a new home for disability culture in Aotearoa. Learn more about who we are, why we exist, and how we collaborate with people across our communities to create positive change together."

I only just found this site, and I'm excited. I look forward to learning more about disability culture and politics in New Zealand/Aotearoa. And, I'm prompted to go looking for similar publications from other countries other than the US, Canada, and the UK, which tend to dominate my disability reading.

Disabled Joy

Ali | Seated Perspectives

"Disabled joy is a lifeline. It’s resistance. It’s the spark that keeps so many of us going ... This is a space for everyone who’s tired of having disability flattened into inspiration or tragedy. A space where we get to be full humans — complicated, tender, curious, funny, angry, and soft."

This is another new find for me, and I've only just begun to explore. But I can already tell that there is lovely writing here, and ideas about disability that are at once familiar and explained in fresh ways.
