## Hi there!

Another week is just about wrapped up – my first full week out of the hospital. How was your week?

American Association of People with Disabilities - September 16, 2026

> "Look up key voter registration dates and deadlines, the issues and people you’ll be voting on, and your polling location. Make sure you save the phone number 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) and bring it with you to call in case you have issues when voting. Most importantly, make a plan to vote as early as possible."

I haven't voted in person since before the COVID pandemic. If do nothing, I'll get a mail-in ballot in plenty of time to vote in the U.S. midterm election. But should I venture out and vote in person this time, just to see what it's like these days?

## [**For families of medically fragile children, a policy change threatens the care they need at home**](https://19thnews.org/2026/08/medically-fragile-children-florida-olmstead/?ref=disability-thinking-weekday.ghost.io)

Sara Luterman, The 19th - August 28, 2026

> "The department did not respond to The 19th’s request for comment or to specific questions about why one of its first acts since the memo involves medically fragile children ... Parents involved in the Florida case before the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, like Kayla Webb, had hoped that the state would be required to provide enough care for their children to live out the rest of their lives at home. "

The retreat from the Olmstead mandate for states to support disabled people in their own homes and communities has begun. I wonder how this sort of thing will play with *MAGA* parents of kids with significant disabilities who maybe thought their programs *wouldn't* be touched by the Trump administration. What does it take for personal disability experience and parental devotion to overrule ideology?

> "Artichoke Credit Union is designed to help address these challenges through accessible banking, specialized financial education, responsible lending, inclusive product design, tools that support long-term financial well-being, and ongoing community-driven improvements. At launch, Artichoke Credit Union is expected to offer checking and savings accounts, certificates, personal loans, credit and debit cards, financial education resources, and budgeting tools. Members will also have access to support through live chat, phone, and video services, along with accessibility-focused features such as account alerts, guardian access options, and other custom-designed tools shaped by the needs of the community it serves."

I'm not enough of a finance expert to be able to tell for myself whether or not this is likely to help disabled people significantly. But the barriers mentioned are real and familiar. And what's planned looks well-supported and relevant. Even just on the surface, the idea seems brilliant and exciting.
