Jamie Hale
Jamie Hale
"I’m a poet, theatremaker and director by trade, and an access consultant, coach HR expert consultant, and researcher by the other half of my working life. Part-human, part-cyborg, I am sustained by power, electronics, and machines. I tend to think about bodies, technology, care and culture as tangled up together, because in my life they are."
I've barely begun to look into this one. But it looks promising. The article titles are intriguing, the writing seems like a pleasure to read. And the photos on each piece are lively and interesting. They make me think about change my own approach to newsletter graphics here.
Smart Ass Cripple
Mike Ervin
"Expressing pain through sarcasm since 2010."
I have been reading Mike Ervin's writing since the late 1990s, when he wrote for one of the earlier disability magazines – the kind that published on slick paper before online magazines and newsletters were even a thing. I think it was called Mainstream. Later on, he started doing articles on disability topics for The Progressive. Now he has a blog that I dip in and out of three or four times a year. Mike's sarcastic, irony-soaked, cheerfully transgressive writing was perfect for me when I was just starting to reconfigure how I felt, spoke, and wrote about my own disabilities. And I am still envious at how much he can say in so few words. I need to make Smart Ass Cripple a more regular part of my disability reading routine.
Rolling with it
Kelly Mack
"Rolling With It explores living with a disability. It covers rolling through life with a wheelchair and over the obstacles created by ableism and inaccessibility."
Kelly Mack's Substack is one of the first I picked up when I started my own. It's a good mix of personal and systemic approaches to the problems of being disabled. I haven't followed or shared her writing as much lately, for no particular reason. So, now is probably a good time to get reacquainted with her work.
