5/23/25 - Friday Video Share: Deaf President Now! — Official Trailer

In yesterday's newsletter, I thought about the drawbacks of nostalgia and the importance of history for disability communities. So it seems appropriate to have this documentary trailer to share today – on a memorable and still fascinating moment in disability history.
Deaf President Now! — Official Trailer
Apple TV+ - May 7, 2025
The Deaf President Now! protests happened during my senior year in college. It was the first time I really started to see how disability activism could be effective, exciting, and fun. And that meant it was something I could imagine being involved with and supporting. I've never been as personally comfortable with highly confrontational protest as some in disability activism. But I can appreciate it when it's done creatively. And I can see its positive impact when it works as intended. Deaf President Now! worked, in pretty spectacular fashion.
More fundamentally, seeing the Deaf President Now! protest by other disabled people my age and also in college changed my attitude towards disability culture and my place in it as a disabled person. Instead of something depressing or mildly embarrassing, I started to feel that being involved in disability communities was something interesting that I wanted to do. It changed my mind, and my life.
I look forward to watching the full documentary!
