Rep. Subramanaym Speaks on Adults with Disabilities Repeated Eligibility Checks on the House Floor
Congressman Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10) - February 4, 2026
I think most people can understand why disabled people are annoyed when we are required to again and again prove or document our disabilities. But I'm not sure people get how genuinely painful and terrifying it can be when we have to do this in order to get or keep something we need. Satisfying random strangers' and distant cousins' curiosity is one thing. Being threatened with loss of benefits or supports if we don't prove we're still disabled is quite another. Some kind of gatekeeping is obviously necessary. But it can be a lot more sensible and less frightening than it often is.
