Shane Got A Catheter!

Squirmy and Grubs, YouTube - December 21, 2024

Here's another video that should go on any "essential viewing" list for disabled people and their allies. It would be especially helpful for people who have new disabilities. But it may be even more meaningful for long-term disabled people who still struggle with adopting new tools and coping mechanisms that can make our lives better, but which we initially resist because of "internalized ableism." In this case, it's condom catheters to make peeing more self-sufficient and convenient. But similar narratives play out all the time for disabled people who dread or put off using wheelchairs, canes, crutches, or walkers. I think it even relates somewhat to conflicted feelings people might have about other adaptations, like medications for mental health, guide dogs and white canes for blind people, Sign Language for deaf people, and Braille and large print for blind and visually impaired people.

Also, as usual, Shane and Hannah manage to discuss these serious, profound issues in a light, entertaining way that makes it all so accessible in every sense. They're fun to spend time with, no matter what they're talking about.

Have a great weekend everyone!
